One of my favorite stories in the Bible is found in the Old Testament and it’s the story of a battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites. To get the full picture, you’ll need to read the story in Exodus 17. But I want to highlight the part that’s really incredible:
As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset.
Ex. 17:12-13 NLT
During this battle, Moses knew that he could not let his hands drop. He was called to lead from the top of the mountain and whenever his hands dropped, the Israelites began to lose the battle. And as his arms grew tired, his people recognized what they could do to help. They didn’t just cheer him on from the side or pray for him from the back of the mountain. They got in there and used their own strength to help prop up his arms.
The battle you are fighting may not look the same as what I’m fighting but the one thing that we all have in common is that God has called us to rally around our people. (See Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).
So, who are your people?
Whose arms are you holding up? AND, who’s in your corner that’s holding up YOUR arms?
Having the right people in your corner is huge.
You don’t just need friends who will be honest with you and tell you the truth (though that’s important). But, you need people who are willing to go into battle WITH you; friends who will not just pray FOR you, but who will pray WITH you. Those are the types of friends that I believe are indispensable!
So, when you battle, because you will, be certain that you have the right people in your corner.
And, when your friends battle, because they are battling, get in there and hold up their arms.
