When I was a teenager, I was taught that God speaks and, and I believed it. But, as I started sharing that truth with friends, I was surprised to find that even though many of them grew up in church, the idea that God could speak to them personally was foreign. It made me realize just how rare it was to be taught to listen for His voice.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
God speaks—personally, clearly, and lovingly. And the more closely we walk with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes.
When I was growing up, my dad didn’t live with us, but he would call every couple of days. Every time, he’d start the conversation by saying, “Hey, it’s Dad.” Even now, when he texts, he often includes the same phrase. I think it’s his way of offering reassurance—a reminder that his voice can be trusted.
Now, let me clarify, I’ve never heard the Holy Spirit speak to me audibly or say, “Hey, it’s God.” But I believe His desire is similar: that we would grow to recognize and trust His voice. He doesn’t need to introduce Himself because, over time, relationship builds recognition.
That’s why learning to identify when and how the Holy Spirit is speaking is so essential. It’s not just about hearing—it’s about trust. Trusting the voice of God.
To help you learn to identify the voice of God and apply what the Holy Spirit is saying, I’ve created a list of some of the ways that I’ve heard the Holy Spirit speak to me.
How God speaks:
- Scripture – His unchanging truth – God’s written Word is always our foundation. He never contradicts it. He’s never going to give us a word for someone that contradicts what scripture says. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16–17
- Inner Prompting – A quiet prompt – The Holy Spirit often leads through a nudge, whisper, or a quiet sense of direction. “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21
- Images or Impressions – A visual or felt sense through images or impressions – Sometimes, God speaks to me through pictures and impressions, especially in prayer. “The word of the Lord came to me: ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘I see the branch of an almond tree,’ I replied. The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.’” – Jeremiah 1:11–12
- Through Others – When someone shares something Spirit-led – God often uses people to deliver a timely word we need to hear. “But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.” – 1 Corinthians 14:3
- Peace or Conviction – A spiritual “yes” or check in your spirit – Sometimes His answer is just this deep inner peace—or even sometimes, it’s a restlessness that causes us to pause. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” – Colossians 3:15
- Gentle Whisper – God doesn’t usually shout—He whispers. He invites us to a quietness and to tune in. “The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” – 1 Kings 19:11-12
Learning to hear the voice of God is vital for every follower of Jesus. If you’re struggling to identify hearing God’s voice, let me encourage you today because God wants to speak to you and He wants you to hear from Him. So, the next time you’re spending some time in prayer, pause and wait. Wait on the Lord to speak. Because He is speaking.
I want you to know that I’m praying for you that the Holy Spirit will captivate your attention, slow your pace down, and quiet the waters around you so that you may hear the voice of God.
There’s hope for you today.
